Vertical Partitioning

When a set of sub-systems is being designed, with the system in mind, it is the case that the individual sub-systems will have some common features.

In a software system these could be things like a boot process, a management system, a communication system etc.  The question is do you try and design the, say, boot process as a ’common feature’ or let each individual sub-system have its own boot process?

If the system is designed with ‘common features’ this would be horizontal partitioning, vertical partitioning is when each individual sub-systems have no common features and each has its own, say, boot process.

Each individual sub-system has its own boot process, management system, communication system etc.  There is no connection between the individual processes as in horizontal partitioning.

Vertical partitioning explained.
