System Partitioning & Legacy Equipment

Many, if not most, new systems do not start from a blank sheet of paper.  It is also the case that most new systems will need to be compatible with equipment that has already been delivered and in use.

If a previous version of the system has already been constructed in a certain manner the chances are the new version will need to be constructed using the same pattern.  For instance, if a car manufacturer develops a new gear box it will need to slot into the same car super structure unless the whole super structure is redesigned.  The economics mean that any improvement will need to fit into the old system or the improvement would not be economically viable.

It will also be the case that the division of labour, within the car company, has certain areas of expertise and talent, you will have engine specialists, electrical system specialists, gear box specialists etc.  This will make it inevitable that the new system will be divided along the same lines.  When the Chief Designer is planning the next car it will be partitioned along these areas of expertise.
