My Dissertation - Fourth Week of Study

Dates: 23.2.2007 to 1.3.2007

This week has all been about planning and trying to define how I will approach the dissertation.

I have said it before but the benefit of a plan is not the plan but the planning.  I have been using a diagramming protocol called IDEF; this breaks down a complex flow into a series of diagrams that get more and more detailed.

I have yet to finalise a single diagram, I keep going back and changing previous diagrams as I realise that my plan is not right.  It really makes you think about how you are going to approach the dissertation, what you intend to do, what you need to do etc.

I would really recommend a detailed planning phase to anyone who intends to a long period of independent studying, you look at the plan and realise it won’t work, you would have only found this out at the time you came to do the task if you had not performed the planning.

I will have to come back to the planning in a few weeks, I need to complete my literature search and get some citations for my dissertation.  A citation is a refereed paper that you reference or quote or otherwise use in your own paper, a reference.

I need to define some citations as I need to prove that I am aware of the current situation and I have not completed my studying in isolation and merely re-inventing the wheel.  It also allows you to benefit from the endeavours of others so the advancement in the subject area is quicker than if everybody studied in isolation.
