Week Minus One

Dates: 28.1.2007 to 1.2.2007

I have shortened the length of the ‘diary week’ for this week so as to align the ‘diary weeks’ with the start of the course - the official start date.  The official start date is Friday the second of February.

As I have shortened the ‘diary week’ it only covers one weekend day - last Sunday; as I work full time the vast majority of my work is done at the weekend so I’ve only had one real day of work.

Most of last Sunday was spent continuing my literature search, I have now got, I reckon, enough ‘refereed’ papers to be going on with; I will now need to read through them and see what is relevant and what I can use.

I don’t have Microsoft Project on my P.C. at home so each day this week I have been staying on at work and using MS Project to create a plan for my study.  I have so far completed up to the 27th of March, this is the due date for TMA 01, the first milestone in my studying.

I have said before that the biggest benefit of producing a plan is not the plan but the planning, well it wasn’t me who said that but a World War 2 military leader; I can’t remember who though.

This is certainly true in my case, having to sit down and actually write down, and look at, what you plan to do certainly focuses the mind.  When you plan something in your head you don’t give it as much thought as when you write the plan out, it is also easier to see things that are wrong when it is written down.  Doing a dissertation is a challenge, certainly for me, so I can’t afford any inefficiencies in my work, I don’t want to do anything that is unnecessary.

I will also start to plan the rest of my year out, I will do the ‘broad strokes’ first and fill in the detail as time goes by.  A lot of what I will do in the future depends on what has happened just before so this methodology is the only viable methodology.
